What is Renewable Energy?

Renewable energy is energy generated by natural resources (such as sunlight, wind, rain, tides and geothermal heat) which are naturally replenished.

Renewable energy technologies like solar panels, biomass boilers and heat pumps are becoming increasingly popular in recognition of their efficiency, environmental benefit and cost savings.

The main technologies are:

  • Solar panels. These can generate up to 70 per cent of the hot water you use every year, and even your own electricity. They work by using all forms of sunlight, not only relying on direct sunshine, meaning that they continue to operate in cloudy overcast. It is easier to deploy solar power these days as planning restrictions are being eased.
  • Heat pumps. These include ground, air and water source heat pumps. They all work on the same principle, using the same type of technology as your fridge – taking heat from one place and moving it to another.
  • Biomass boilers. These burn waste products (such as wood or animal waste) to generate heat and hot water for your home. Wood pellets and wood chips are two commonly used sources of fuel.
